R&B Independent Discussion Group Automation Special 3/4

Posted on 17/02/202303/03/2023 by Malcolm

This week we had the third session of our “Automation February” workshops with three interesting speakers

Zoe Charlesworth

  • Independent Consultant, Welfare Services
  • How far can the UCDS be used to automate benefit take-up?
  • zcharlesworth@outlook.com

Daniel Pearce

  • Director of Business Development, Telsolutions
  • Local Authority Services
  •  01279 456 679
  • https://telsolutions.co.uk/

Malcolm Gardner

  • Director, Visionary Network
  • Welfare Automation in Sweden
  • 07946800171
  • malcolm@visionarynetwork.com

A great case study from Daniel Pearce, which really got under the skin of how automation realistically works and can produce real savings for the local authority and better services to the citizen.

Zoe Charlesworth made the argument that better use of Universal Credit data that is already supplied to the council could automate take-up of CTR. In a way that would be effective and powerful.

Malcolm Gardner (yes that’s me) looked at how Sweden is driving automation into welfare administration and what we can learn from Trelleborg who gamely introduced automation to their complex mean-tested applications for welfare support. Spoilers: All was rosy until it wasn’t.

I am grateful to Tylor-Maria for her gentle but firm chairship and to the contributors to the discussion.

I am appreciative to the speakers for their time and informative presentations.

The slides are attached and the link to the recording is https://bit.ly/VNRBRPA3

Next week in the final session we will explore decision bias in automation and a case study from Jon Gibbs of Civica
