Monday Discussion Group 29/4/24 R&B Apprenticeship & An Ageing Workforce

Posted on 30/04/2024 by Malcolm

This Monday, we had an engaging session featuring a presentation by Julie Maycock on the Revenues and Benefits Apprentice Scheme. Our discussion also touched on the challenges of an aging workforce and the need for career progression that appeals to young talent. Apprenticeships are proving to be vital tools in developing our future teams in Revenues and Benefits.

Apprenticeships provide a solid foundation in a variety of skills, preparing individuals to be future leaders in our field. Alongside these, we have access to excellent technical training through providers like LA Directories.

Kevin Stewart made an interesting observation, noting how much the R&B departments have evolved since the 1980s. Unlike the past, where departments primarily processed tasks, today they play a crucial role in bridging service gaps, supported by a network of government bodies, charities, and nonprofits.

One other point which is apprenticeships are a great way to upskill older staff.  I have used apprenticeship as a way to get staff to learn management and data skills.  Plus, there is a lot of money washing around in the levy, just waiting to be used up.

On the other hand, there is the challenges of having an ageing workforce and the range of issues that brings.

Please note, we’ll skip our next session for May Day celebrations. later on May 20th, we plan to host a panel of young managers to discuss current issues and gather their insights. The purpose is to if they have different perspectives.

I will just draw your attention to a couple of bits of caselaw mention in the slide pack.

Looking forward to seeing you on 13th May.
